No surprise, this one is about my pops. His great curve-busting results in his fight against cancer resulted in my youngest daughter plotting with my mom to get him a puppy. And a story is born in half an hour one afternoon.
But a kid’s book is mostly about illustrations. My agent offered to shop this book to publishers for me, but, if we had done that, I wouldn’t have gotten to pick the illustrator. I knew who I wanted, if she was willing to do it. Laylie Frazier has been part of our family, essentially, for ten years, since she started dating our youngest son. She’s also a talented artist and children’s art teacher. But book illustrations are a lot of work. Luckily, she loves my dad, too, because she said, “Yes!” (and probably regretted it immensely a few months in, but she stuck with it). I LOVE the art. LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
A few years ago, my husband Eric Hutchins received the sweetest message from a woman who had read some of my books with her sister. She credited their shared love of reading (and finding things they both liked, like my books or those of Sara Rosett) a great way to bring them closer together, as they were separated by life and age more than they liked.
That was the start of my friendship with Tara and Karen. Karen edits for me pre-publication, and Tara advance reviews/proofreads. When Eric and I were spending a lot of time in Dallas, I had some walks and lunches with Karen (and a group dinner date with our husbands). Tara lives far away in Atlanta, but recently she offered to write a song to go with my first children’s book, Poppy Needs a Puppy
), Poppy & Petey #1.
You guys, this is a BIG DEAL. Tara is a Grammy-nominated musician, formerly one of Reba’s (yes, that Reba) songwriters, and a Top 40 pop star with Snapdragon. She teaches music to kids and still writes, performs, and records, although mostly more for children now than for adults. Her/Snapdragon’s “Orangecrush
” is on my favorites iTunes playlist. YOU HAVE TO CHECK HER OUT. http://tarascheyer.com
The resulting song “Poppy Needs a Puppy” song just blows me away. She even let me sing on it, which was so much fun. (I recorded the vocals in our Snowheresville basement in a closet, LOL)
The song is out being finished now, but she sent a pre-buff-and-polish version that I have up for temporary sharesies with you guys. Everything on it is her, except for my voice. She wrote it, played the music, arranged it, edited it, and sang background. Take a listen, here… https://pamelafaganhutchins.com/pnap/
